Bauer first to jump in the Hot Tub

On a special edition of Currents, John Bauer and Heidi Holtan broadcast a mix of new music live from a Hot Tub. After John convinced Heidi that she can't wear her sweater in the hot tub, they both ran and jumped in. It turns out all the hauling of buckets of water up from the Mississippi River was totally worth it...and its the 2nd most relaxing thing to today in northern MN...click here to check out the #1 thing to do!

The question is; "What will warm you up, hot tub or sauna". It is obvious that the answer is the hot tub. Basic thermodynamics will indicate that the Specific Enthalpy of water at 40 degrees C (104 degrees F) is approximately 158.85 BTU's per kilogram per degree Celsius; while the Specific Enthalpy of air at 60 degrees C (140 degrees F) is approximately 0.952 BTU's per kilogram per degree Celsius. When you enter a 300 gallon hot tub, you are immersed in a medium (water) that has approximately 850,470 BTU's of latent heat energy available for each degree the medium drops. When you enter an 8' x 8' x 7' sauna at 140 degrees, the medium (air) has only approximately 15 BTU's of latent heat energy available (most of the latent heat energy is in the walls, seats, rocks, etc., but you are not going to set on the rocks). In cases of hypothermia, medical research has found that a circulating hot water blanket or garment will heat the body 56% faster that a circulating air blanket or garment. Result: if you want to warm up quickly, jump in hot water - if you are not concerned about time, then jump in a sauna.
